The Rutgers tomato, also known as the Jersey tomato or the Rutgers Select, was the most popular tomato variety in the world before the era of mechanized farming began a change in breeding for durability over flavor. It is an open pollinated beefsteak from the family Solanaceae with an excellent balance of acidity to sweetness and much flavor. Rutgers tomatoes are a smaller (12-14 ounces), globe-shaped variety created in the 1930s to produce a tasty, hearty, and versatile fruit. The plant is an indeterminate grower that typically does not grow higher than around 36", needing 70-80 days to reach maturity.
