Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce is an open-pollinated, heirloom that has been a favorite of market gardeners and backyard gardeners for over 100 years. This leaf lettuce variety produces broad leaves that are ruffled and crinkled on the edges. Heads produce rich, green heads that are extremely tender and flavorful. This is a heavy-yielding variety with wide, dense heads. It is a great variety for making fresh garden salads, or using it to add a delicious crunch to your favorite sandwich or wrap. Black Seeded Simpson does well in cooler weather and not so well in hot weather. When the heat strikes, it produces flowers, or bolts, pretty quickly. The leaves of lettuce that have bolted aren't tasty anymore, due to an increase in compounds that cause bitterness after the plant flowers
